Strong Sigma grape crop expected

Rio Rico, az — Sonora’s fresh table grape crop this spring shipped 20 million boxes, which, by all accounts, is a very large crop. “We were really pleased with the 2017 deal. We expect another big crop this year,” said Mike Smith, president of Sigma Sales Inc.

Mike-Smith-RyanMike and Ryan SmithSmith credits those in the Sonoran grape industry for realizing early that they had a big crop and they wanted to get in front of it. “There was high quality, which was great for promoting,” he said. “The industry was very interested in selling the crop. That was the general feeling.”

Sigma Sales is a shipper of the Melo table grape label. Smith said his proprietary brand will be up in volume again this spring.

This will involve Early Sweets — an early green grape that Sigma produces in Obregon. “This will be increasing in volume this year and over the next few years,” said Smith. Sigma also ships Flames that are grown in Caborca.

As Sigma geared up to ship mixed loads from Nogales again this fall, Smith said, “we’ve had good weather. The crops look very good. We have plenty of supplies to promote. Quality should be good across the board.”
