Havel foresees a ‘different’ Mexican season

“I think this season will be a little bit different,” Jerry Havel, director of sales and marketing for Fresh Farms LLC, said of the 2018-19 Mexican vegetable deal. “There has been a lot of rain, especially in Sinaloa, since mid-September.”

Havel-butternut-squash Beyond the storms, there have been unusual cool periods in Mexico. Also impacting the fall deal were hurricanes in Florida and Georgia.

“My early feel is that it could be a highly inconsistent market,” said Havel.

Speaking on behalf of Fresh Farms, Havel is very positive. “We have more retailers every year,” he said, adding that there are more direct deals and the firm’s product quality improves each season.

Colored Bell peppers are new to the Mexican vegetable mix and Havel said the colored Bells will be on the market from January until as late as early May.

Fresh Farms will also be shipping bi-colored and yellow sweet corn from January into March.

This fall, Fresh Farms, based in Rio Rico, AZ, is shipping more of everything compared to last season, said Havel, adding that, “We’re 12 years old. We’re up every year and we’re up this year.” This includes hard and soft squash, green beans, watermelons, and American and English cucumbers. The English cucumber shipping was to begin about Oct. 15.

Fresh Farms’ organic program for squash and cucumbers is also increasing.

Havel said green Bells, green beans and hard squash would be coming into the market in November.

This April, Fresh Farms will enter its third year of shipping from its young table grape vineyard in Jalisco. Havel said the volume would be up a lot from 2017, when young vines produced smaller commercial volumes. “We expect to ship a half-million boxes from there, just in April,” he added.
