FNGLA announces 2017-18 officers

The Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association announced its 2017-18 elected officers in a news release. The elections took place June 23 as part of the FNGLA Annual Convention in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

FNGLA-2017-18-OFFICERSFNGLA’s 2017-18 officers: President-elect Will Womack, owner at Tampa Bay Landscaping in Tampa, FL; President Ed Bravo, partner at Big Trees Plantation, Inc. in Ocala; Past President Robert Shoelson, owner and president at Getting Green Plant Service in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Betrock Information Systems in Hollywood, FL; and Secretary/Treasurer Shawn Thomas, operations director at Southern Green Chemical Lawn Care in Jacksonville, FL.Ed Bravo, partner at Big Trees Plantation in Ocala, FL, is FNGLA’s new president. He was born in Santiago de Cuba and immigrated to the United States one year later. His nursery and landscape career began in 1979 when he started working as a landscape laborer. Within two years he became the production manager at a Gainesville-area nursery and was the sole proprietor at Moonlight Landscape. In 1996, he became the general manager at Big Trees Nursery and in 2001 he became a partner at the company. He has served FNGLA Frontrunners Chapter in many roles, including president; he represented the Frontrunners Chapter on the statewide FNGLA board of directors from 2009 to 2013, and is a member of the FNGLA endowed research fund steering committee.

FNGLA president-elect Will Womack started Tampa Bay Landscaping in 2002 and is an International Society of Arboriculture-certified arborist. He is active in the Tampa Bay Chapter of FNGLA, the Hillsborough County Farm Bureau, has served on the FNGLA board of directors, its marketing and membership committee, the budget committee, the certifications committee, holds two FNGLA professional certifications and has served as a judge for certification exams.

Newly elected to serve as FNGLA secretary-treasurer is Shawn Thomas. He began his landscape career with B & L Landscape in Jacksonville, FL, and is currently the operations director at Southern Green Chemical Lawn Care in Jacksonville, running four branches throughout Florida. He is an active member of FNGLA’s marketing and membership committee and represents the Northeast Chapter on FNGLA’s board of directors. He is also a vice president at the Florida Irrigation Society, serves on Gateway College’s board of directors, and is very involved with Duval County Farm Bureau, FFA and 4-H programs.

Robert Shoelson is now FNGLA’s immediate past president. He grew up in the nursery and landscape industry, is a certified landscape inspector and has earned two FNGLA professional certifications — landscape contractor and horticulture professional. He is the owner and president at Getting Green Plant Services in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and the chief operating officer at Betrock Information Systems in Hollywood, FL. He is active on FNGLA’s certification, knowledge college and budget committees, has served on FNGLA’s board of directors as Woody Division and Broward Chapter Board representatives, was president at FNGLA’s Broward Chapter three times and is active in several industry groups, including the Landscape Inspectors Association.
